Right then, that is all from this game. Adelaide Strikers have finally managed to break their losing streak and they will look to get on a winning run from here. On the other hand, the Perth Scorchers have been handed their first defeat of the season but they will feel that it is a minor blip and look to bounce back in the next game. The Big Bash League 2023-24 action continues on 6th January, Saturday when the Melbourne Stars will take on the Sydney Sixers. The game will begin at 1.45 pm IST (8.15 am GMT), but as always, you can join us early for the build-up. Till then, take care and goodbye!
Matthew Short is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant knock of 76 runs from 51 balls. He said that the win was much needed for them, as it was a tough season for them but the fans rocked up every time and they finally got a win for them. He also states that they had nothing to lose and credits the bowling group for their efforts. Mentions that he doesn't feel any extra pressure with the bat. Adds that he is really feeling good and Chris Lynn has guided him well in these 12-18 months. He ends up saying Lynn helps him to stay calm.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, after being inserted into bat by Matthew Short, Perth Scorchers were rocked early as they lost both their openers inside the first three overs. Aaron Hardie and Josh Inglis then got together to steady the ship and did a decent job of keeping the scoreboard ticking. Hardie got off to a start but could not make it count and Inglis followed suit a couple of overs later. The Scorchers kept losing wickets at regular intervals and also failed to make the Power Surge count. As a result, the defending champions limped their way to 153. For the Adelaide Strikers, David Payne and Lloyd Pope combined well to take two wickets each. Matthew Short, Henry Thornton and Cameron Boyce accounted for one wicket each.
With not a big total to defend, Perth Scorchers needed early wickets and they would have backed themselves to defend this total given the resources they had. They started on the wrong foot as Jhye Richardson dropped a sharp chance to give Matthew Short a life in the first over. The Scorchers were made to pay by the Strikers' skipper and how. Moreover. they were not able to keep the runs in check in the Powerplay and allowed the Strikers to get a good head start in the run chase. Despite getting rid of D'Arcy Short after the Powerplay, they failed to impose pressure on the new batter and kept leaking boundaries every now and then. As a result, the Adelaide Strikers made light work of the target and handed the Scorchers their first defeat of the season.
Having done well with the ball, Adelaide Strikers were able to take momentum into their batting effort. Matthew Short survived an early scare on the first ball but got off the blocks quickly. D'Arcy Short played his part too in accumulating 55 runs in the Powerplay for the Adelaide Strikers. Coming in at number 3, Chris Lynn ensured that the Striker's innings did not lose steam and took the attack to the opposition. Neither of the two batters was ready to put the foot off the accelerator and kept finding the boundaries at will against the strong bowling unit of the Scorchers. Short continued his rich vein of form as he brought up his fifth fifty of this season while Lynn remained unbeaten on 50 to see his side home. Thanks to the unbeaten 96-run stand between Lynn and Short, Adelaide Strikers cruised home with 9 wickets in hand and 3.5 overs to spare.
An empathic victory by the Adelaide Strikers to break their four-game losing streak! They have outclassed the defending champions to register their second win of the competition. As far as the Perth Scorchers are concerned, they just were not able to turn up in this game and missed the opportunity of doing the double over the Strikers.
