Team India gave a clinical performance against Sri Lanka in the first Test match played at Mohali’s PCA Stadium. The five-day encounter was finished in just three days because of complete dominance by the home team.
After pilling up 574 runs yesterday in the 1st innings. The Indian bowlers gave a treat to their fans on Sunday. The spinners dismantled Sri Lanka in both innings, allowing India to bag a massive win of 222 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were the chief architects for India in this huge win.
Jadeja ad Ashwin outclass Sri Lanka in the 1st innings –
Ravi Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin are the current best pairs of spin bowling all-rounders. Their dominance in the home conditions is unmatched, and they have also fared well in the overseas series. Jaddu piled up a mammoth score of unbeaten 175 runs in the 1st innings with the bat, and with the bowl, he took a five-wicket haul.
Sri Lanka continued from their overnight score of 108 runs with the loss of four wickets. The visitors had a good partnership between Nissanka and Charitha Asalanka. Nissanka made full use of the one chance that went his way yesterday, and today, Shreyas Iyer also dropped his catch. Pathum Nissanka scored a valiant half-century, and he was unbeaten in the 1st innings.
Only Chairtha Asalanka gave Nissanka good support. They shared a stand of 58 runs, and things were going decently good for them as they also made full use of the luck which had favored them. They hit a boundary whenever the Indian bowlers bowled the wrong lines and lengths.
This partnership from the Nissanka and Asalanka made India toiled a bit hard. But it was Boom Boom Bumrah who gave this much-needed breakthrough. Jasprit Bumrah removed Charitha Asalanka, and then the famous batting collapse hunted the Sri Lankans twice in this match.
The visitors’ lower order didn’t trouble the India bowlers more, and Ravindra Jadeja ripped the Sri Lankan batting apart with his five-wicket haul in this Test match. Nissanka was not out on 63 runs. He stood at one end and saw all the carnage done by Jadeja, Bumrah, and Ashwin. Sri Lanka’s 1st innings was folded for just 174 runs.
Sri Lanka score four runs more than their 1st innings total –
Sri Lanka has not won a single Test match against India in India because they have a poor top order, inexperienced middle order, and the lower order that doesn’t contribute with the bat. They seek answers from their top order before the Pink Ball Test match starts in Bengaluru.
The batters showed the same old story of Lankans in the second innings after India had enforced a follow-on. India had 400 runs in their bank, and the bowlers were also keen to continue the dominance.
In the first innings, the Sri Lankan openers had put on 48 runs for the 1st wicket. But they failed to cope with the pressure and excellence of Ravichandran Ashwin. Lahiri Thiramane was out for a duck with just ten runs on the board.
Pathum Nissanka was the lone fifty scorer for Sri Lanka in the 1st innings. Ashwin dismissed Nissanka with a faint edge, which went to the keeper Pant for just six runs. It looked like the Sri Lankan batters would not survive even till lunch. But the experience of Angelo Matthews and Skipper Karunaratne batted for a bit of time.
Mohammad Shami dismissed the Sri Lankan skipper for 27 runs, and again it had put India on top, especially with the runs in their bank. Angelo Matthews again snitched a partnership with Dhannanjaya de Silva this time. Their 49 runs stand was fun till it lasted, and it ended before causing more damage to the Indian team.
It was Jaddu who took both the wickets for India. Jadeja dismissed De Silva first and the former Sri Lankan skipper Mathews. Charith Asalanka batted well in the first innings, and he smashed two sixes and two fours in the first few balls.
But Ashwin made his innings cut short, and he took the 435th wicket of his Test career. Ashwin went past the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev who had taken 434 wickets in Test matches for India.
Niroshan Dickweela showed some resistance with a decent half-century. Dickwella scored an unbeaten 51 runs, and Ashwin wrapped the Sri Lankan innings with the last wicket of Lahiru Kumara. SL scored 178 runs in the second innings.
The Great Indian Bowling
The Indian spinners were too good, especially Ashwin and Jadeja. They both batted exceptionally well in the first innings as well. The pitch also supported the spinners more than the fast bowlers still, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami bowled their hearts out to contribute to the team.
Jaddu picked up a nine-wicket haul in the match. But he missed an opportunity to become the first player who has scored more than 150 runs and taken ten wickets by a margin of just one scalp. Jaddu can do it in the next Test match. Ashwin picked up six wickets overall, while Bumrah and Shami picked up two wickets each in this Test match.
Jadeja was named as the player of the match because of his all-round performance. The next match will be a Day-Night affair. This Pink Ball test match will be played from 12th March to 16th March 2022 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
