Right then, that was it from another exciting game of the World Championship of Legends. The Pakistan Champions make it two wins in two games, whilst the West Indies Champions open their campaign with a loss. The action continues as we have a doubleheader on Friday, the 5th of July. It will be Australia Champions versus South Africa Champions at 5 pm IST (11.30 am GMT) and India Champions versus West Indies Champions at 9 pm IST (3.30 pm GMT) but as you know, our build-up begins much sooner so do join us for the same. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Shoaib Malik is the Player Of The Match. He says he is happy to cross the line. Adds that scoring against the pacers was easy but not that much against the spinners. He says that the credit goes to the batters on top as they laid a perfect platform for the rest to follow. Mentions that he has not missed a training session throughout but he wasn't practicing much before the tournament as he was giving his analysis on the recently concluded T20 World Cup.
Younis Khan, the skipper of Pakistan Champions says that it feels good, and it was a team effort. He says that they were in doubt about whether to bat or bowl first but ultimately it was a good decision. Says that Shoaib Malik was good with the bat and ends by saying that the crowd was great as well.
Chris Gayle, the skipper of the West Indies Champions says the game was a good one and Pakistan Champions did well in the initial phase of the game with the bat and closed well too. Adds that the first game of any tournament is not a lot to worry about and he feels happy to have got a bit of game time for the side under their belt. Mentions that they knew the bowling of the Pakistan Champions would come in handy and the spin of Shahid Afridi in the end damaged their flow of runs and that damaged their chance to win. Says that the fans have always cheered them on, and it feels good to see such support even today for their side.
Stay tuned for the Presentations...
Earlier in the game, the Pakistan Champions displayed a mix of strong batting performances and moments of struggle during their innings, posting a total of 194 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. After a solid start in the powerplay, a valuable partnership between Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik, and a quick inning by Aamer Yamin towards the end, helped bolster their total. The West Indies Champions had a mixed performance, struggling initially but staging a comeback in the middle overs. Ashley Nurse stood out with three crucial wickets, while Fidel Edwards claimed two wickets. Despite their efforts, the West Indies team couldn't contain the Pakistan Champions efficiently towards the end, conceding more runs in the final overs and ending up with a mammoth total of 195 to chase!
Pakistan's bowling performance was nothing short of exceptional. They displayed remarkable skill in picking up early wickets, effectively containing the West Indies Champions, and keeping the required run rate out of reach. While the partnership between Dwayne Smith and Jonathan Carter posed a hiccup for them, but once the partnership was broken, they managed to pick timely wickets. The turning point came in the 17th over when Sohail Tanvir's dismissal of Smith swung the game decisively in Pakistan's favor. Sohail Tanvir was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers, as he picked up a four-fer and had an economy rate of just 3.5. Shahid Afridi picked up three wickets while Wahab Riaz chipped in with a couple. Overall, it was a well-deserved victory for the Pakistan Champions!
That's it! Two wins in two games for the Pakistan Champions. The West Indies Champions will be unhappy with their performance with the bat and the ball and they will look to bounce back in their next game. They made a steady start to the game but stumbled early on when they lost their skipper, Chris Gayle, in the third over. Chadwick Walton also departed in the seventh over, leaving Jonathan Carter to partner with Dwayne Smith. The duo exhibited an impressive display of batting, particularly with Dwayne Smith taking on the role of aggressor. Together, they forged a partnership of 80 runs off just 47 before Carter was dismissed. Following Smith's departure in the 17th over, the team's hopes of victory disintegrated as he was the only hope at the crease. The wickets then kept on tumbling and the run rate kept on going up. Their prospects for a comeback grew increasingly bleak as the momentum of the game remained firmly in favor of the Pakistan Champions.
