The two-time IPL champion team, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), hope to end their drought in this 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season. KKR won the two IPL titles under the captaincy of former Indian opening batsman, Gautam Gambhir, in the seasons of IPL 2012 and IPL 2014. But since then, they have not been in the contention of winning the title again. Knight Riders reached the finals of the last IPL season. But Dhoni and his men outplayed them in Dubai.
The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League is likely to start later in March, and the KKR franchise has brought a decent team that can hold the trophy this year. KKR franchise has picked Shreyas Iyer in their squad. This Indian middle-order batsman was brought for a whopping purse of 12.25 crores. Iyer was a part of the Delhi Capitals team earlier. He even led that team to their maiden playoffs and finals in two back-to-back years.
But Shreyas was injured at the wrong time, and that is why Rishabh Pant was made the skipper of the Delhi Capitals team. The DC franchise hasn’t retained their former skipper Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant will lead the DC side for the IPL 2022 season. The Kolkata Knight Riders franchise has announced its new skipper for this upcoming season.
Shreyas Iyer has been named the captain of the side. He will replace Eoin Morgan as the skipper. Morgan went unsold in the recent IPL mega auction held in Bangalore on 12th and 13th February 2022. Morgan led the KKR side to the finals of the IPL 2021 season in Dubai.
The KKR side struggled at the bottom of the points table in the first half of this cash-rich league tournament. Due to the inspirational leadership from the World Cup-winning skipper of England, Eoin Morgan did transform the KKR side and led them till the finals. Despite this spectacular achievement, Morgan wasn’t retained, which may be because of his poor batting form, which he showed in the IPL 2021 season.
Venky Mysore, the CEO, and MD of the KKR side said that they are delighted to buy Shreyas Iyer in the IPL mega auction, and they are happy to make him a leader of the KKR side. Shreyas is a quality batsman at the international level. He impressed one and all with his batsmanship, and the KKR franchise knows that he will be a successful leader of their franchise.
