Indian Cricket Coaching Changes Ahead
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon be advertising for a new coach, according to Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary. Shah stated that Rahul Dravid’s tenure is set to end in June, and if he wishes to apply for the position, he is free to do so. The BCCI will decide on the appointment of other coaching staff, including batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, in consultation with the new coach.
Shah did not rule out the possibility of appointing a foreign coach, stating that it would be up to the CAC, as the BCCI is a global body. The board is unlikely to consider different coaches for different formats, unlike the ECB and the PCB, and will leave that decision up to the CAC. There are many all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, and there is no precedent for such a situation in India.
League and Leadership Considerations
A new coach will be appointed for a long-term period of three years. Regarding the Impact Player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Shah stated that a decision will be made after consulting with captains and coaches. The IPL allows each team to include two additional Indian players in their XI.
Shah stressed the significance of the Impact Player rule in the IPL as it provides opportunities that would allow an additional two Indian players to show what they can do. He said that they would seek views from franchisees, and stakeholders among others in order to determine whether or not the rule should be sustained.
He also clarified that there have been no discussions on reviving the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, contrary to recent claims made by an official from Cricket Victoria in Mumbai.
Shah left everyone guessing whether he will be taking up the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairmanship in November but did disclose that discussions will be held regarding the possibility of holding the World Test Championship (WTC) final outside of England. The emphasis of Shah was on the importance of red-ball cricket and he indicated that it would be up to the respective state associations to increase the pay for domestic players. Hardik Pandya has decided to participate in white-ball domestic cricket following his grades A placement in the Central Contracts. Additionally, the structure of domestic cricket will be disclosed soon by Shah as he approved the establishment of a High-Performance Centre at the National Cricket Academy.
